She was born in Ridgewood, NJ, the oldest of three sisters, graduating Ridgewood HS and Colby-Sawyer Jr. College, NH, respectively. Gail soon married and started a family. She had many friends and enjoyed being active in civic, church, and community activities in Madison, NJ. Moving to Raleigh, NC, in 1971, she started an exciting new chapter, raising her son and daughter as a brave, divorced working mother.
In Raleigh, in her beloved Oak Park, she earned respect among neighbors, who became trusted advocates and lifelong friends. Together, they cheered on their children at baseball, swimming, tennis, and soccer events and had great fun. She had a passion for cooking and lived for a good party. Cheers, Gail!
She worked long hours to provide for her family and used her entertaining talent to become a savvy event planner. During her long career with FMI, Inc., she was named the Southeast’s Meeting Planner of the Year by Meeting Planners International (MPI). Upon retirement, she followed a new generation of soccer stars, her grandkids, who cherished seeing “GG” in the stands.
She was a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church, as well as bridge and book clubs. An avid reader, she shared books and conversation with friends and townhome neighbors.
Throughout her life, Gail fought for all that was important to her. Her animals – her furry kids – were no exception. She was fierce and unwavering in her love for her dogs and cats, who brought her such joy, comfort and peace. We smile knowing that she is now reunited with her beloved pets. RIP Mom/Gail/GG
Gail is predeceased by her parents, Leonard Cornelius and Harriet Frost Vanderbeck. She is survived by sisters, Cheryl (Brian) and their children and Karen (Tom) and their children; her son Russell (Becki); grandchildren Austin, Bryson, and Lauryn; her daughter, Marnee; and dog, Sophie.
A graveside service will take place Wednesday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at Raleigh Memorial Park, 7501 Glenwood Ave. Afterwards, we invite guests to join us at the Crabtree Marriott to celebrate Gail.
