Frederick Charles Hull passed away Dec 2, 2021 peacefully in his sleep at the age of 106 after a long, happy, and productive life. Fred was born Nov 9, 1915 in Alliance, OH. His family moved often, living in a number of towns in Ohio, Iowa, and finally settling in Ann Arbor, MI. Fred graduated from the University of Michigan in 1937 with a BS in Metallurgy and earned his PhD in Metallurgy in 1941 from Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Fred made his career with Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh as a research metallurgist, retiring in 1981. He holds 10 U.S. Patents, received the Dudley Medal of the American Society of Testing and Materials and the Lincoln Gold Metal of the American Welding Society, and was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Metals. At the age of 77, Fred remarried, accepted Jesus as his savior, and started a new life in Raleigh, NC.
Fred had a competitive streak and was an excellent bridge player and golfer. In his 90’s, he was able to best his age on the golf course. He enjoyed playing games around the dining table with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Fred enjoyed the outdoors as a white-water canoeist and going on hikes in Durant Park with his grandchildren. He freely volunteered of his time serving as Scout Master, treasurer for the American Youth Hostels outdoor club in Pittsburgh, and supporting Christ Baptist Church in Raleigh.
Fred is survived by his wife Elizabeth Garvin-Hull, his son Laurence Hull, his step daughters Jean Mahan and Suzette Leskowicz, 10 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife Clara Eileen Hull and his sister Muriel Rose McKean.
