Eleanor Ryan Eskridge died peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2014. She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on June 30, 1929, the daughter of the late William Hunter Ryan and Alice Moody Ryan. She lived for a short time in Birmingham before moving with her family to Atlanta, Georgia. She grew up in Atlanta attending public schools there and graduating from Druid Hills High School in 1946. She attended the University of Alabama for two years and while there, was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. In 1948, she transferred to Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia and graduated from Agnes Scott in 1950 with an AB Degree in history. She married in 1951 and lived in Atlanta until 1956 when she moved with her family to Raleigh.
During her many years in Raleigh, she was a member of Saint Michael's Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the Junior League of Raleigh. During her active League years, she was a Docent at the Museum of Art and was for several years the editor of Missprints. She was a member of several social clubs and also a member of the Carolina Country Club.
Eleanor's life centered around her family. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She adored her family and they adored her. She was a pleasant. friendly and warm person, and if you knew Eleanor, you liked Eleanor. She was a truly delightful lady.
Her hobbies were reading, cross word puzzles, and bridge, and she spent many happy hours doing each.
She was predeceased by her only sister, Alyce Barrett. She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Beeler Eskridge, a daughter and husband, Alyce and Spears Mullen, a daughter, Carolyn Eskridge, a granddaughter and husband, Catharine and Scott Palmer, and a grandson, Peter Mullen.
A memorial service for Eleanor will be held at Saint Michael's Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road Raleigh, NC on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at 2:30 pm. The family will receive friends in the church parish hall following the service.
