An Army brat and later the wife of a career officer, Eileen lived in many places throughout the world, including China, Okinawa, and Hawaii. She attended Sacred Heart School in Washington, DC, then earned her B.A. in French at Maryville College (Class of ‘38) in St. Louis, MO. Horses and dogs were her favorite animals and she was an accomplished equestrian in her youth.
While her husband, Nip, served in the U.S. Army in Reykjavik, Iceland, then in Europe during WWII, Eileen volunteered in a secretarial capacity for the Landing Force Equipment Depot to prepare our forces for D-Day, and for the Red Cross Blood Mobile in Norfolk, VA. She continued her volunteer work with the Red Cross throughout her life. Eileen and Nip made Raleigh their home after retirement from the Army in 1966.
She was a wonderful mother and a great homemaker. She was also an avid bridge player and golfer and was a member of the Raleigh Country Club and the “Par Chasers.” Eileen’s life was characterized by her grace, kindness, selflessness, and devotion to her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Eileen was preceded in death by her husband, Reginald “Nip” Page and three brothers, Joseph M. Cummins, Jr., Thomas D. Cummins and Robert J. Cummins.
She is survived by her sister Kathleen “Mickey” Cummins (Asheville); her children: Tom Page and wife Karen (Newport News), Sue Brenzel (Raleigh), Nan May and husband Gene (Asheville), and Bob Page and wife Susan (Atlanta). Twelve grandchildren: Chris Brenzel and wife Nalina; Jenny Brenzel, Chris, Alexis, Matt and Ashley Page, Sarah May Leech and husband Mike; Andrew May and wife Katie; Margaret and Robert May, and Lachlan and Zebulon Page. Five great-grandchildren: Makaela, Addison, Benjamin, Hailey and Chloe. Her brother Joe‘s children, Mary Jane Swindley, Michael J. Cummins and their families completed Eileen‘s loving family.
The family will receive friends at 11:30 am on Saturday, August 13th, at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh. Funeral rites in celebration of Eileen’s life will be held at 1:00 pm in the Brown-Wynne chapel, followed by a short graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Raleigh.
