Edward was born in Binghamton, New York on March 1, 1931, to the late George and Anna Halgas, he was the eldest sibling to his Sister Olga.
Edward was a Staff Sergeant in the US Air Force and served in the Korean War, he spent three years stationed in England and Scotland. During his stay there, he rented a room in a boarding house in Scotland, and it was there he met the love of his life, Dorothy. Dorothy came to the States after their engagement along with her Mother Gertrude…it was a package deal:) They were married in 1956 at St. James Church in Johnson City, NY and later relocated to Ithaca where they started their family with the adoption of their daughters, Colleen and Maureen. The majority of Edwards career was spent as a Gas Superintendent with NYS Electric & Gas and where he retired in 1994.
Edward was a member of the Elks Lodge in Ithaca, he spent years enjoying the camaraderie and friendships of other members…you could always find Ed in the kitchen cooking and helping out. His hobbies included cards, he loved playing euchre, reading, fishing, weekends on the boat at Cayuga lake, cooking which included his famous New England Clam Chowder and he along with my mom, were members of the Immaculate Conception church choir for years.
His later years in life were spent traveling with my Mom Dorothy, they belonged to a travel club with dear friends that created years of great travel memories, they were also the consummate cruise couple, I believe twenty-five under their belt, and one of those cruises the kids and I joined them to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
Edward is preceded in death by his father, George Halgas and Mother Anna Halgas and Mother-in-Law, Gertrude Robertson.
Edward is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Dorothy (Robertson) Halgas; daughters Colleen Halgas and Maureen Rivera, his Grandson Max Rivera and Granddaughter Madison Rivera, his Sister Olga Bucek, Brother- in- law, Francis Bucek and three nieces Nadine Bucek-Rosekrans, Katherine Bucek and Susan Mumaw.
