A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at Millbrook Baptist Church. Prior to the service, the family will receive family and friends from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. in the church sanctuary and a reception will immediately follow in the Fellowship Hall.
Don was born in Surf City, NC to the late Earl Glenn Batts and Inez Spence Batts. Don was a graduate of East Carolina University and proudly served his country in the United States Navy. For over 25 years, Don worked for the State Board of Health managing the organ procurement, diabetes, high blood pressure, and immunizations programs.
Don’s belief in Jesus Christ was faithfully demonstrated in his service to the church as a Sunday school teacher and a dedicated volunteer. Don was a role model to his family in so many others demonstrating selfless compassion along with standing steadfast to his principles.
Don was devoted to his family and was active in coaching his boys in various community and church athletic leagues through the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was also an avid East Carolina Pirate fan in the heart of Wolfpack country. Don also had a keen interest in history, especially Civil War history, and would often share stories pertaining to his research with interested and uninterested parties.
Don is survived by his wife of 46 years, Wilma Gay Batts, sons, Donald Earl Batts Jr and wife Janet of Greenville, and David Lee Batts and wife Angie of Clayton, daughters, Tracey Batts Thompson of Raleigh, and Megan Batts Stark of Raleigh, and grandchildren Ashlyn Batts, Carter Batts, Brooke Motzno, Harper Batts, Hudson Stark, and Conleigh Stark, and sisters Anne Wortman of Sneads Ferry, and Audrey Viner of Raeford.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research.
