He was born in Rockingham County, NC at the beginning of the depression. As a child he experienced poverty and worked hard to help his parents and siblings. Dewey hunted rabbits to help feed the family and he looked after his younger siblings. As a teenager in Greensboro during World War II, he worked as a Western Union messenger boy carrying messages all over Greensboro on his bicycle. Many of these were news of soldiers’ deaths. The experience gave him nightmares for years.
He went on to operate a successful building supply company and used his success to enrich the lives of many people. He was a very generous, kind, and blessed man.
Dewey loved golf and played as often as he could with his many friends. He played all over the world and the U.S. with one exception. He never played Augusta.
Dewey is preceded in death by his parents, William Jefferson Alley and Nena Mae Hopkins, his wife Nancy Holland Alley, his son Michael Lee Alley, and brothers, Norman Alley, and Dennis Alley.
He is survived by his wife; Anne, son; Joseph Dewey Alley (Mary Pat) of Youngsville, and sister; Edna Andrews of Greensboro.
The celebration of life will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday October 12, 2023, at Hayes Barton Baptist Church. Dr. David Hailey will be officiating. Visitation will be held at the church after the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Healing Transitions, 1251 Goode St., Raleigh, NC, or Wake County SPCA or the charity of your choice.
