Charles Scott Venable, Jr. of Raleigh passed away peacefully, Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 in the home. He was born on Aug. 11, 1924 in Chester, PA, to Charles Scott Venable and Olive Bartlett. He graduated from UNC Chapel Hill in 1949, and was active in several college organizations, including The Golden Fleece and The Order of the Grail. Scott was a WWII veteran, having served in the US Navy for 2 years and 9 months.
His entire career was with the American Lung Assoc. of NC, including serving as the Executive Director from 1952-1991. He was a charter member of the Raleigh Moravian Church. His honors include, the C. Scott Venable Research Award in Pulmonary Disease, established by the American Lung Assoc. of NC. He participated in many athletic events sponsored by the Lung Assoc. including triathlons, biathlons and bike treks. His greatest athletic accomplishment was the Assault on Mt. Mitchell; a 1 day 100 mile bicycle ride from Spartanburg to the top of Mt. Mitchell.
Scott was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister Harriot Davison.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Erdmuth M. Venable; sons, C. Scott Venable III (Liz) of Winston-Salem; Francis P. Venable (Leslie) of Durham; William B. Venable (Susan) of Cary; daughter, Dottie V. Handley (Chris ) of Florence, SC; grandchildren, Cliff (Kimberly), Lindsay, John, Catie, Megan, Ashley, Sarah, and Scott Venable, and Will, Stephen, and David Handley; and great-grandson, Nathanial Raleigh Venable.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, Nov. 21st at 11:00 am at Raleigh Moravian Church, 1816 Ridge Rd., Raleigh. The family will receive friends, following the service in the church Fellowship Hall. A graveside service will be held at the Moravian Cemetery (God’s Acre) at 4:00pm, Monday, Nov. 21st in Winston Salem, NC.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Raleigh Moravian Church, 1816 Ridge Rd. Raleigh, NC 27607.
