Dr. Charles Sandford Levings, III, “Sam”, 86, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. Sam was born on December 1, 1930 in Madison, Wisconsin to the late Charles Sandford Levings, Jr., and Catherine Whiteside Levings. He graduated from Paris High School in 1947 and then went on to serve in the Korean War.
Sam attended DePauw University and the University of Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a Doctor of Philosophy, prior to beginning a 34-year career at NC State University where he was a William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Genetics. He was also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and in 1987, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences, the Nation’s most prestigious scientific society. He focused his career in the area of plant molecular biology, and among his many accomplishments, his work resulted in the issuance of six U.S. patents.
During his retirement, Sam enjoyed spending time with his family and friends at Topsail Beach. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed gardening, bird hunting, and fishing, and he was well known at the Jolly Roger Pier. He will be remembered for his ever-present sense of humor and his dedication to his family.
Sam was preceded in death by his son, John Michael Levings. He is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Catherine Levings; his three daughters, Carol Levings Strickland, Karin Levings, and Lisa Levings Gaylord and husband Rick; his daughter-in-law Karen Teachey Levings; his grandchildren, Stacy Strickland Little and husband Adam, Kristin Strickland, Lauren Levings, Nicole Gaylord, Cory Levings, and Alex Gaylord; and his sister, Judy Curtis.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2017, from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home at 300 Saint Mary’s Street in Raleigh, NC. A funeral service to celebrate Sam’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 23, 2017, at Sacred Heart Cathedral at 200 Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, NC. A burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery at 701 Oakwood Avenue in Raleigh, NC.
The family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Sam’s team at Transitions LifeCare and his caregivers at Mayview Convalescent Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association or Transitions LifeCare.
