Cecil Warren Squires Sr.

Cecil was born on October 14, 1938, to the late Alvie Carlyle Squires and Nellie Faye Thomasson Squires of Wake County. Cecil was educated in the Wake County schools, graduating from Broughton High School.

Cecil was very much a people person, enjoying his time visiting others on his paper route and never missing a phone call to wish a friend Happy Birthday. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle to and from work with his ponytail blowing in the wind. Cecil devoted his life to service, being in the Marine Reserves, working at McCallum’s Wholesale Floral Service, the News and Observer, Department of Revenue, Belk, and even ran his very own Mayberry’s Ice Cream with his wife, Linda from 1982-92. Cecil retired in 2017.

He and Linda spent most of their time dancing, winning the Master’s Division at the National’s in 2013, along with various other contests. Cecil was inducted into the Shagger’s Hall of Fame and Living Legend at North Myrtle Beach, SC, as well as Atlantic Beach and Virginia Beach. When he wasn’t dancing, he spent his time being the official photographer for the SPA contests and judging multiple contests.

Cecil is survived by his wife of 59 years, Linda Jackson Squires; children, Renee Ford (Johnny) and Warren Squires (Madeline); brother, Leonard Squires (Linda); niece, Jenny Howell (Tim); grandchildren, Chris Squires (Hillary), Bryan Squires (Courtney), Brittany Parker (CJ), Wyatt Holley, Codi Ford and Landon Ford; great-grandchildren Cayden, Bayleigh, Braxton, Bryson, Chloe, and Kyle.

The family wishes to provide a special thank you to the staff of Heartland Hospice for their loving, diligent care, especially Stephanie Watkins for her support and generosity.

A celebration of life was held at Mitchell Funeral Home on Tuesday, August 2nd.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Shagger’s Hall of Fame in North Myrtle Beach, SC, or Heartland Hospice.
