Bonnie Burns (Jones) Henley, 75, died August 3, 2015 at Duke Raleigh Hospital after a brave battle with ovarian cancer. Born on July 27, 1940 in Durham, Bonnie was the daughter of DeWitt F. Burns and Virginia W. Burns. She lived in Durham until 1957 when the family moved to Raleigh and where she graduated from Broughton High School in 1958. Bonnie received an x-ray degree and was employed by Rex Hospital.
In 1961, Bonnie and Cris Jones were married. They had four children together and lived in Raleigh, Charleston, and Blowing Rock. She ran for Mayor of Blowing Rock in 1977 and lost by a narrow margin. In 1982 Bonnie and Bob Henley were married. Bonnie loved sports, travel, the N.C. mountains and people. When she was in her late 50’s she took up golf and became a real fan of that sport. She was interested in everyone she met and everyone was her friend. Bonnie was a loyal and faithful member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church. She was a great cook and really enjoyed cooking for weekly Communion lunches.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
She is survived by her children, Cris (Janet ) Jones of Blowing Rock, Virginia Jones of Redding, California, Elizabeth (Chris ) Mowbray of Matthews, NC, and Sherwood Jones of Raleigh; grandchildren, Sarah and Crisman Jones, Alexandria, Emma and Annabel Mowbray; brother, Chip(Ann) Burns , and step-children, Laura (Larry) Caison, Susan Henley and Mark Henley.
Funeral services will be held at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church on Monday, August 10, 2015 at 2:00 P.M. with visitation following the service in the church parish hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 1520 Canterbury Road, Raleigh, NC 27608, or to St. Mary of the Hills Episcopal Church, 140 Chestnut Drive, Blowing Rock, NC 28605.
