Alvera Hall Lawrence, 93, of Raleigh, died Wednesday, January 25. Surviving are her daughter, Audrey Lawrence, and granddaughter, Judy Smith, of Raleigh, son-in-law, Barker Edwards, of Clayton, and dog, Molly Lawrence, of Raleigh.
Vera was born in Yoakum, Texas to Lottie Hall and had a sister Daphine Steinmeyer, nee Hall and brother Sonny Hall. She grew up during the Great Depression and married August Lawrence in 1947 at age 18. She and August had two daughters: Judy Edwards, nee Lawrence (deceased) and Audrey. August was deployed in the Air Force, so they moved frequently. At a very young age, Vera took charge, kept the family together, and handled multiple moves through the US, the Azores and Japan, before ultimately settling in Raleigh in the 1960s.
Vera loved to sing and loved nature, including wildflowers, birds and various Texas wildlife. Her pride and joy was a silver 1966 Mustang, and she co-founded the Heart of Carolina Mustang Club. She was also an avid collector of blue and white china and cast iron pieces. She had many dogs throughout her life, the most recent of which was Molly.
Funeral services, followed by a reception, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home 300 St. Mary’s Street, Raleigh.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Air Force Aid Society.
