Alton McNeer Whorley

Alton “Al” McNeer Whorley reached the end of his life’s journey on April 13, 2016. Al was a loyal friend, ideal employee and devoted church member, who loved life, his family and playing cards. He was an avid walker and was a funny, hardworking father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was an active member in every community where he lived, was loved by many, and will be missed by all.

Born to Ola Mae Whorley and Clarence McNeer Whorley on August 14, 1929 in Bedford, Virginia, he was the loving husband of Kathryn Key Whorley for 64 years until her death in 2011. He was a charter member of Parkwood United Methodist Church. For over three decades, he was a very active member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where he was Treasurer for 17 years, and most recently attended Soapstone United Methodist Church. Al retired from Kroger after 29 years of employment and then retired from Kerr Drugstore after 25 years. He continued to work at Kerr Drugstore part-time until he was 84 years old. He spent the last two and a half years living in Magnolia Glen in Raleigh and was unofficially referred to as the “Social Coordinator” soon after he moved in.

He was the loving father of David Whorley (deceased), Brenda Whitlow (Bill) of Virginia Beach, VA, Annette Doroski (Chuck) of Centreville, VA, Martha Radulovich (Mike) of Raleigh, and Rhonda Meehan (Mike) of Virginia Beach, VA. He was a caring Papa of Heather Whitlow Sorgen (Brad), Courtney Whitlow, Jacquelyn Doroski Price (Nick), Joshua Doroski, Ryan and Rachel Radulovich, David and Christopher Meehan, Sean (Sofia) and Caitie Meehan, and great-grandfather of Chase and Ryder Sorgen and Darwin Meehan.

Memorials may be made to Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 724 Beaver Creek Rd., Apex, NC 27502 or Soapstone United Methodist Church, 12837 Norwood Rd., Raleigh, NC 27613. A Celebration of Life will be held at Ebenezer on April 23rd at 11am. Officiating will be the Reverends Benny Oakes and Mike Safley. Arrangements are under the care of Mitchell Funeral Home in Raleigh.
