Cindy (grand-daughter) fond memory of  Gong Gong :

The office on the side of my grandparents’ house is pretty unassuming. It has the same black metal chair that’s been there as long as I can remember, and a sewing machine my grandmother still uses tucked away in the corner. But I remember many afternoons sitting in that chair, the way the light crept through the blinds, as my grandfather and I would pour over letters he would want to send. He would spell out the writing and words with me so that we could learn them together and often would ask me to help him address and stamp them which I loved. And it marked our ritual together of writing correspondences, sometimes to my friends back at home as I grew old enough to write my own. We would then go on our walks through their neighborhood to the mailbox. That was a treat for me because we didn’t have mailboxes like this at home (at least that’s what I thought as a child - I had never seen one). I remember the smells and sounds as we did our stroll, and the satisfying feeling of getting to drop them in the then seemingly giant box with him. Sometimes if we wandered far enough, he would take me to the park farther down by their house to people watch, and as it grew later in the day, we turned and headed home, our day’s mission accomplished.

Julie (daughter) shared memories :

Loy Wong lived a full and adventurous life.  He and our mother shared a blissful marriage for 74 years.  They moved from China to Hong Kong, from Hong Kong to England, and finally settled in the US.  Together, they travelled the world and worked hard to raise 4 children and watched us grow into adults.  As well as see their grandchildren grow and all achieving thriving careers.  Our parents instilled upon us the importance of hard work, dedication, and determination.   
Loy was a successful and well-respected restaurant owner and waiter in England and the US.   Our father used to say, if he had the opportunity to go to college, he would have made an excellent engineer in all disciplines (electrical, mechanical, chemical etc..).  He was very creative and had many talents. He had the skills of an amateur carpenter, auto mechanic, tailor, chef, and interior designer.  However, if you see his works, they may not pass code or inspection 
Our father was a generous man.  He never hesitated to help any friend or family in need.   He would give car rides to friends across town, spent countless hours making copies of VHS tapes of Chinese opera and movies for friends, made special trips to buy things for others from Honey Baked Ham (especially the 2 for 1 ham bone sale with a free box of beans), and home goods from Job Lot (his favourite store). 
Though we are heart broken and sadden by the loss of our father, we are also blessed to have so many fond memories of him which will live forever.  
Our father is in heaven now, we are certain those families and friends who went before him will be at the pearly gates with Chinese Opera playing and Maj Jong tables all set up to welcome him.

Cindy SooHoo (grand-daughter) Shared a memory :

I have fond memories of going with GongGong to Chinatown, sometimes to eat dim sum first and if not to go to the restaurants and visit with his friends so they could meet his grandchild and exchange the latest news. It was always boisterous and warm - you could tell they had formed lifelong friendships and shared many memories past and present. 
Afterwards we would stop by the Chinese bakery and pick up a fresh box of pastries - the ones in the pink box and tied tightly with white twine. They were for later, to bring home but he always let me sneak a fresh egg tart - as long as I promised to eat my dinner later.
Before going home, we would make one last stop to the apothecary store. I would pour over the brushes, inks, and papers used for calligraphy. To my excitement he would let me pick one of each to my liking. When we got home, he would meticulously show me how to dip the ink and hold my brush just right to form sweeping Chinese characters. I could never get the strokes right but each movement he made was purposeful - even down to the seemingly rogue drips of ink. I remember being entranced watching him do this. 
He was good at paying attention to what made you happy, even if you didn’t realize he was watching. Every time I came back as a child, he would have these waiting for me and our lesson would begin again. 
I love you GongGong.  Rest In Peace

Memory shared by Kevin (grandson):
I have always thought highly of my gon gon, as I remember him throughout the short life I have lived so far.  I do wish that I had taken the time to learn Chinese in that time.  Without that, I missed out on the conversations and stories and wisdom and jokes that could have been shared.  However, despite the language barrier, the feeling of love and presence has always been palpable.  It was simply communicated through the experiences and companionship shared whenever we were together.
I think fondly of the times we spent together. 
I remember one time when I, must have been some 8 or 10 years old, an aspiring Tae Kwon Do yellow belt practicing my kicks in the living room.  My mother told me that gon gon was the kung fu master of the family, and she dared me to challenge him to a duel.  Of course, in my youthful over confidence, I obliged.
I stood before gon gon, spinning, kicking, and flourishing with what I must have believed to be intimidating grace.  I took one step towards him, and in a single fluid motion he took a half step back, turned, and swept his leg under my legs, effortlessly knocking me to the floor.  Next thing I know I was stirring at the ceiling
God, was I embarrassed then.  I dare say it was one of the most humbling experiences of my life.  But I will always remember the lesson from that.  While youth and energy may get you far, it is often wisdom and experience that will win the day.
Now as we stand here today in memory of gon gon, I can only think to respect the life he lived and aspire to grow into of honorable and devoted people which he would be proud to call his family
