Son of Mary (Ruggiano) and James Purpura, he was born on March 23, 1935. He was raised and educated in Quincy, employed in sales and printing at Child World for 30 years, and has been retired for many years. He is a former scoutmaster for Troop 33 in Quincy. After a valiant fight with esophageal cancer, his strong will to live, his faith, love, and prayers from family and friends supported him through all he went through, and he proved himself to be a fighter. John loved putting together puzzles and working in his word search books; you often found him with a puzzle book or coloring books during the day. He loved his trips to Cape Cod for seafood and boat rides with Barbara and Mike Pepin, phone calls with his niece Shirley Holbrook Fiske Mennella and sister-in-law Liz Holbrook-Dicenzo, and just hanging at home with his cats and dog. Many Saturdays were spent at the Quincy Elks meat raffles with his niece Donnalee Baker and many friends and family.
John was devoted to his family. He was predeceased by his parents and loving wife Shirley (Holbrook) Purpura. John is one of seven siblings; he was predeceased by his sister Mary (Rossi) and his brothers Frank Purpura, Joseph Purpura, James Purpura, Charles Purpura, and Augustine “Gus” Purpura. He was a devoted father of Robert G. Purpura of Quincy, John P. Purpura, and his wife MaryEllen of Halifax, and he was predeceased by a son, James E. Purpura of Florida. John was a loving grandfather of five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was survived by many nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at Deware Funeral Home, 576 Hancock Street, Quincy, on Wednesday, February 14, from 4 – 6 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Saint John the Baptist Church, 44 School Street, Quincy, on Thursday, February 15, at 10 a.m. Internment to follow at Blue Hills Cemetery, Braintree.
