David Carr Smith, 76, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away Wednesday, February 3, 2021 after a long battle with throat cancer. He was born on August 9, 1944 in Fort Wayne, IN to the late James and Kathyrn (Mefford) Smith and raised in Niskayuna, NY. David attended Clarkson College where he earned a PhD in Chemistry and, following a career in the pharmaceutical industry, he retired to the Gulf Coast of Florida in 2004.
David is survived by his former wife of 44 years, Dolores Kurz Smith from Port Charlotte, FL, sister Karen Nolan of Fort Wayne, IN, sons Douglas Sanford (Denise) of Mount Juliet, TN, David Smith (Roxann) of Newington, CT, and Daniel Smith (Bonnie) of West Mifflin, PA. David is also survived by four grandsons (Brett Azeredo, Brandon Sanford, Nicholas Smith, and Jack Smith), five great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
There will be no services at this time, a private memorial will be held at the convenience of the family.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
