Wayne Austin Smyer

Wayne Austin Smyer, 91, passed away at home on September 23, 2023. Wayne is preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Berta Ymelda Gonzalez Pintos; his parents, Ewing Austin Smyer and Susie Lee Cooper, brother Henry Samual (Steve) and sister Billie Joann. He is survived by his loving children, Karl Alberto Smyer (Pam), Gretchen Catalina Smyer Fox (Steve), Naiely Suzanne Smyer (Steve) and Maria Elena Smyer. He welcomed 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren with a loving heart. In his later years, special companion Virginia Morris. Wayne was born in 1932 in Lorenzo, Texas. He was a veteran of the Korean War as a combat engineer for the army and received the National Defense Service Medal. He attended Mexico City College (University of the Americas), Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Texas A&I, and Colorado State University. Wayne received a B.A. and M.A. in Psychology and an AED. Before moving to Colorado, he worked as a certified Deputy Sheriff for Ectory County, Texas, worked on oil rigs, farms, driving trucks and picked cotton as a child. He worked as a Clinical Psychologist III for over 20 years in Pueblo, Colorado for the Colorado State Hospital in General Adult Psychiatric (GAPS), Behavior Therapy Laboratory and in 1973 he established the Bio-Feedback Laboratory.

Wayne was a serious book lover, commercial licensed Oregon fisherman, wine maker, world traveler and good friend. He was a member of the Pueblo Herb Society, Fray Angelico Chavez Genealogical Society, and the Sierra Club. He enjoyed reading mysteries, telling stories, spending time with his family, friends, his dogs and traveling to Oregon and Mexico. Wayne had an open heart and he easily would accept and help people no matter where they were in life. He lived his life with purpose and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service for Wayne will be held Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at 1:00 PM at Imperial Funeral Home, 5450 Highway 78 West, Pueblo, Colorado 81005. Following the memorial service will be an inurnment at 2:00 PM at Imperial Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 5450 Highway 78 West, Pueblo, Colorado 81005.
