Max Lewis Flint, 80, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2022, with Kathy, the love of his life of 61years, by his side. Max was larger than life to so many and gifted by God with multiple skills and talents that he put to effective use throughout his entire life. Max was a man of God, husband, dad, brother, avid hunter, expert shooter, a true master fisherman, Union Business Agent, an innovative gardener, a smart decision maker, perpetual motivator, and a natural born leader. Max set and kept his priorities straight: God, Family, Fishing, Hunting, Union Brotherhood.
Max used to say that he was born in LA – which was actually Las Animas, Colorado. He is a lifetime native Coloradoan, spending the last 75 years in his hometown of Pueblo, Colorado. He married his high school sweetheart Kathy, and they were an inseparable team, sharing and living out one of the greatest love stories of our time, raising four children together, all accomplished and leaders in their own fields of expertise. Max also has seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren and one more on the way. Max and Kathy celebrated their 61st anniversary with an adventurous family mountain ATV getaway in the Colorado Rockies, with 14 ATVs, 8 trucks and campers, rock climbing, campfire storytelling – a Flint legacy Max started and modeled so that there are now many “Flint Family” storytellers.
As an outdoorsman, Max took fishing and hunting to an entirely new level. He made 100s of his own unique fishing lures, melting lead to pour into the molds and hand painting them to get just the right combination for the end goal, to catch fish, and that he did catching over 10,000 fish of all types, from catfish to hammerhead sharks! A true master fisherman. On the hunting front, Max loved to hunt Colorado elk, deer, turkey. quail, pheasant and to his hunting credits he finished with over 64 elk, many deer, antelope and game birds … delicious meals all. He also gave back and contributed his sportsman skills to several Sporting Boards and committees, including being appointed as the Sportsman’s representative to the HPP (Habitat Partnership Program), and helping to get Lake Pueblo built back in the 70s, though he might have had a personal agenda as he sure enjoyed fishing the reservoir so close to home!
Though one might think these were mere hobbies, make no mistake, Max hunted and fished for all the food to feed his family … and continued even right up to a few days before he passed, supplying the fish for one last fun and famous Flint family fish frys!
On the professional front, Max was a proficient plumber, pipefitter and welder, serving as Journeyman and Foreman on countless jobs around Colorado. He then used his leadership skills and business acumen to become the youngest elected Union Business Agent in the country and led the Local 20 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union for 23 years, serving his men well as he loved his Union brothers,
Max was preceded in death by his Father (V.E. Flint), Mother (Pearl) and older brother Jack. He is survived by his wife Kathleen, sister Sandy Andrews (Bob Kennedy), brother Tim Flint (Jana); children Brenda Iniguez (Ray), Matthew Flint (Sue), Elizabeth Riffle (Steve), Diana Montoya (Ron); grandkids Colton Flint (Katrina), Shannan Winchell (David), Shelby Riffle, Tyler Riffle (Marisa), Mason Blount (April), Kaytee Blount, Madison Montoya; great grandkids Maggie and Everett Winchell, Hunter and Ellie Tudor, Braxton and Beckett Riffle.
Whether hunting in the thick Colorado quakies, fishing in his boat on the lakes of the US or Canada, serving in his Church ministries and Bible studies, or on one of the Flint family cruises, making fishing lures or muzzleloading ammo, teaching his kids and grandkids some of life’s tough lessons and the magic of the outdoors, Max was always a man of his word, living with integrity, steadfast in prayer and always part of the powerful Max & Kathy duo.
Summing up Max’s essence, he lived his whole life with gusto, full steam ahead:
