John moved his family from West Branch, MI in 1985 to Beulah to take on a new position at St. Mary-Corwin Hospital, where he led a few departments for 14 years before realizing his true calling.
In 2000, John took a leap of faith by opening the widely popular Max’s Place in Colorado City. For nearly 20 years, Max’s Place served hundreds of thousands of meals to the community and frequent travelers along the I-25 corridor.
He was an active member of the Greenhorn Valley community helping with fundraising opportunities and becoming a volunteer board member of the Rye Fire Department.
His beautiful wife, Kathy M. Schaiberger passed away on January 18th, 2021. However, his legacy is survived by his amazing daughter, Susan E. Lozano, 2 incredible grandkids, Gabriel and Victoria, and his favorite son-in-law, Javier.
John also enjoyed spending time with his family, watching the Michigan Wolverines play football, or, on several occasions, using his dictionary-like brain to crush his family in an entertaining game of Scrabble.
He appreciated being with his dogs and horses, hunting, camping, and simply driving, exploring, and wandering the countryside.
John will be missed by so many people.
Services will be held 1pm Saturday, October 22nd at Brush Canyon Ranch in Rye. 8760 Old San Isabel Rd.
