Raymond J. Bergeron Jr., 57, of Riverside, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family and friends on August 23, 2024. He was the beloved husband to Jennifer Bergeron (Downing). Devoted father to Jenna E. Bergeron and friend to her companion Shaun DaRocha.
Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Raymond. J and Maureen (Aquaviva) Bergeron Sr, and natural born son to the late Claire Desrosiers. Brother of the late Stephen K. Bergeron and nephew of Patricia (Aquaviva) and Paul Aubin. Natural aunt, Robin Munoz (Desrosiers). Raymond was lucky enough to be reunited with his birth family in 2014. This helped to make his world complete.
Raymond has several aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as extended family and numerous childhood friends from Riverside and brother to his shipmates of the USS Raleigh.
Uncle Raymond also left several nieces and nephews: Devin, Aaron, and Emily Benson, Kimberly Perry; Kayla (Perry) Barrett; Akacia Bergeron; Jayden Recinos and Francisco Guadalupe, and great nieces Amariana Bergeron and Shayla Barrett. He was adored by them all. He had the pleasure of taking some of them with Jenna to Battleship Cove in Fall River to visit and explore the ships to show them a window into his Navy life.
Ray also had two other loves in his life, his beloved cats Jupiter and Winifred. They were his faithful companions, and the girls never left his side.
Raymond grew up in Riverside, RI, when he enlisted in the United States Navy, he followed in his grandfather Mauro’s footsteps. This is something Raymond was always passionate about. During his time in the service, he was commissioned on the USS Raleigh, stationed in Norfolk Viriginia. He served several tours and traveled the world, visiting so many beautiful places. During his service, he received a commendation ribbon for serving during the Iran/Iraq war and his ship was part of the fleet participating in Operation Earnest Will.
Raymond’s shipmates described him as a guy whom everyone loved, and he never sided with a particular clique – but was a guy who went outside of the boundaries of the norm. They said that “everybody loved Raymond”.
After his honorable discharge in 1989, he came home and worked at American Tourister as a laborer; pipe fitter at Electric Boat, Sears as an appliance repair technician and lastly a loss prevention officer for Ocean State Job Lot in North Kingstown until his illnesses began.
Ray was the kind of guy who would do anything for anyone, no matter what. Fixing a washing machine, installing a dishwasher, changing a flat tire – you asked, and it was done.
This year, Raymond was able to experience many fun events, going to the casino, and attending concerts, going to the beach, to the swimming pool, and most recently Canobie Lake park. He spent 3 hours just floating on the lazy river with the biggest smile on his face! He also was able to drive the model T car, and he was overjoyed with happiness, and it brought him to tears.
Raymond was extremely brave and fought until his last day. He was surrounded by love by those who visited while he was in hospice. While Raymond questioned how he came into this world, he knew how he felt when he left, loved beyond his wildest imagination.
Raymond will be forever missed but will remain in our hearts and memories always.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 3 from 9:00 – 10:15 am in the Pontarelli-Marino Home, 971 Branch Avenue, Providence. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:45 am in St. Anthony Church, 1413 Mineral Spring Avenue, North Providence. Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veteran’s Cemetery, Exeter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Raymond’s memory to Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center of Providence at https://www.hopehealthco.org/ways-to-give/donatenow/
