Philip D. Given, 86, passed away December 29, 2021. He was the husband of the late Barbara H. (Burgess) Given. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late James H. and Loretta I. (Donahue) Given.
Mr. Given was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during the Korean War and had worked as a communication technician for National Grid, the former Narragansett Electric, for 35 years before retiring. Philip was a 1953 graduate of LaSalle Academy and New England Institute of Technology. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Cranston Council 1738. Philip was a communicant of St. Paul Church where he volunteered for The Catholic Charity Fund, was an usher and taught Religious Education for many years.
He was the loving father of Katherine M. Fox (John), Patricia A. Thomas (Harold), James P. Given (Paula), William J. Given, Diane M. Roche (Scott), Joan M. Spaulding (Timothy) and the late Thomas F. Given. He was the brother of Paul A. Given and the late James L. Given and Barbara M. Timmins. He was the devoted grandfather of Barbara Fox-Rushing (Blake), Stephen, Robert and Matthew Fox, Michael, William, Allyson, Daniel and Patrick Thomas, Petrina, James (Cassidy) and Nicholas Given, Alexsandra, Jaime, Abigayle and Hanna Given, Emily and Thomas Roche, Sophie and Annie Spaulding; great-grandfather of Oliver Rushing, Thomas Ives Jr. and Julian Hutchins and the late Audrey Hutchins.
Visitation will be held Monday from 4-7 p.m. with his funeral on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m. from the Russell J. Boyle and Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, Warwick, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Church, 30 Warwick Avenue, Cranston. Graveside burial with military honors will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to St. Paul Church, 30 Warwick Avenue, Cranston, RI 02905.
