George A. Murphy, Jr.

Born in Providence, George was a son of the late George A. and Adelaide (Mello) Murphy.

George proudly served his country in the US Army during the Korean conflict. He was an Army illustrator working on training aids, maps and recruiting posters during his three-and-a-half years with the Army he also joined the army chorus and performed in many USO shows as a vocalist.

After he left the service in 1963 he then tried his hand in the disc jockey world at WYNG in

Warwick hosting a small radio show and occasionally hosting the channel 6 show “Dialing For Dollars.” He also became a licensed small engine pilot.

George then return to the art field. Although he was self-taught he was talented enough to land

a job with Apex as a Commercial Layout artist.

Several years into his career with Apex George was hospitalized following an accident training a

horse. While in the hospital he met and fell in love with his nurse, his beloved Mary. Their love

for the American Quarter Horse and the horse showing world allowed them to have a beautiful

life together showing some of the top Quarter Horses in New England in the 70’s and 80’s until

her passing in 1990.

After his accident George then returned to the art world where he became the Head Layout

artist at Ann & Hope. He started a family and purchased his farm in North Smithfield with his

beloved Mary and daughter Stacey and stayed with Ann & Hope for the next 25 years until his

retirement in 1997.

After his retirement George began doing his other passion besides the horses which was being

an Entertainer by doing commercials for Old Spice cologne and appearing in his own Frank

Sinatra review shows as well as Community Theater plays and Murder Mystery dinners.

George always had a song in his heart, a twinkle in his eye and a story to tell.

 He loved spending time with his granddaughter Alexandra painting model horses, drawing and singing a song together. He touched so many lives and will be missed by many.

George is survived by his daughter, Stacey Murphy, a granddaughter, Alexandra Jordan, a

brother, Ronald Murphy, and his sisters, Jean Murphy, Barbara Carroll, Addie Silva and

Corinne Bellavance. Brother of the late Kathryn Rezendes and Donald Murphy.

His funeral will begin on Friday, February 22, 2019 at 9:00 am from the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road (Rte. 117) Warwick. Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 in St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church Street, Slatersville, RI 02895. Burial,with military honors, will follow in St. John the Evangelist Cemetery.  

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 4 - 7pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in George's memory to The American Cancer Society 931 Jefferson Blvd #3004, Warwick, RI 02886.
