Eli J. Rubin, DDS, 71, passed away peacefully at his home in New Bedford, MA surrounded by loved ones on November 8, 2018 after a brief illness. Dr. Rubin was born on May 16, 1947 in Fall River, MA to Dr. Morris E. and Pearl (Ehrenhaus) Rubin. Eli graduated from New Bedford High School in 1965. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, his MPH from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and his DDS from Temple University School of Dentistry. He practiced dentistry in New Bedford for more than 40 years. On August 24, 1974 he married the love of his life, Barbara, daughter of Hilda and Jack Wolitz. Together they built a life in New Bedford raising two children. Eli was very active in the Jewish community. He served two terms as President of Tifereth Israel Synagogue as well as being on several other committees. Giving back to the community was something he very much enjoyed. He volunteered at several organizations throughout the New Bedford community, including the Zeiterion Theater and most recently, St. Luke’s Hospital and the National Park. Eli enjoyed the summers playing golf and going to Bakers Beach with a book in hand.
He is survived by his wife Barbara (Wolitz) Rubin, daughter Sarah Ross, son-in-law Jonathan Ross, son Ben Rubin and Fiance Caroline Sheridan, grandson Max Ross, sister Rebecca Rubin, nephews Aryeh and Eliezer Feinstein, brother-in-laws Dr. Richard Wolitz and Dr. Stephen Follansbee and nephew of Abraham and Marilyn Ehrenhaus.
Funeral will be held at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 145 Brownell Avenue, New Bedford, on Friday, November 9, 2018 at 1:00 PM. Interment will follow immediately at 1400 Old Plainville Road, New Bedford. Shiva will be at Barbara and Eli’s home during the following times: Friday after interment until 4:10 PM. Saturday, 7-9 PM. Sunday-Wednesday, 2-4 PM & 7-9 PM.
