Edward Francis, "Ted " Almon, 93, passed away on June 8, 2013. He was born in Providence, RI on July 19, 1920, the son of the late Peter and Isabel (Kiernan) Almon. He was the beloved husband of the late Gloria C. (Wilcox) Almon for 44 years.Ted graduated from Classical High School, The Brown and Sharpe Apprenticeship Program, and Bryant College. He retired as Corporate Treasurer of Nicholson File Co. in 1973 upon the sale of the company, and joined Amtrol where he retired as Director of Finance and Human Resources in 1985.He was a proud Marine Corps Veteran of WWII where he served in the Pacific with the 3rd Amphibious Corps. His civic contributions include a Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield of RI for 16 years until assuming Emeritus status in 2000. He was a founding Trustee of St. Clement Parish in Warwick, and a founder and Director of Independence Square, a non-profit shared service organization with facilities in Pawtucket and on the campus of URI. He served a three year term on the Warwick Housing Authority during a period when over two hundred units of elderly housing were added. He also served two separate terms on the Rhode Island Health Services Council of the RI Department of Health over a period spanning nearly two decades where he became known for his meticulous preparation and deep understanding of the healthcare system.But certainly Ted's foremost passion was for sports on every level as participant, coach, and fervent fan. After a standout semi-pro career in baseball was interrupted by the war, he returned to play industrial league fast pitch softball and started a coaching career on various levels of the game over many years. He became a fixture as RI Director for Babe Ruth Baseball, and enjoyed golf, tennis, bowling and attending any sporting event where any of his large and beloved family participated. He was an instrumental influence in the career of his son Bill who had a standout amateur, college, and eventually 15 year major league career.He leaves behind six children, Ted Almon and his wife Dawn of Warwick, Mary Almon of Bristol, Robert C. Almon and his wife Mariana in Manhattan, Bill Almon and his wife Katie of Warwick, Anne Marie Johnson and her husband Steven of Warwick, and John Almon of Cranston. He has fourteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren all of whom he cherished and doted upon throughout his life.He was the brother of Louise Flaherty and the late John, Robert, and Peter Almon.Ted Almon will be remembered as an exceptional member of the Rhode Island community over his long life and for the remarkable joy he found in life and shared with all he met.A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, June 12, 2013, at 11:00 am, in Saint Clement Church, 111 Long Street, Warwick, to which relatives and friends are invited. Burial, with military honors, will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence. Visiting hours Tuesday, 4 - 7 pm, in the Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 142 Centerville Road, (Rt117) Warwick. In lieu of flowers, donations to Saint Clement Catholic Church, 111 Long Street, Warwick, RI 02886 or Brentwood Nursing Home, 4000 Post Road, Warwick, RI 02886 in his memory will be appreciated.
