Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Raffaele and Maria (Caramante) Guglielmi; father of Ralph and Toni Guglielmi; grandfather of Benjamin and Daniel Guglielmi; brother of Rosemary Altieri, Jen Spadetti and the late Bernard and Edmund Guglielmi.
Dr. Guglielmi had been a well-respected anesthesiologist for many years before retiring and had served proudly in the U.S. Navy during WWII. As a senior at Classical High School in 1942, he volunteered to serve his country in the U.S. Navy. He embarked on many overseas campaigns throughout the Pacific Theatre, returning home in 1946 to be honorably discharged to the U.S. Naval Reserves and to complete his high school studies at Classical High School. He went on to graduate from Providence College in 1951, continuing his studies in Italy at the Bologna University School of Medicine and Surgery. He performed his internship at St. Joseph Hospital between 1957 and 1958, after which he began his residency in anesthesiology at Rhode Island Hospital from 1958 to 1960. Upon completion of his residency, he and his two partners in medicine formed Associates In Anesthesia, Inc. Through his practice, he went on to achieve a clinical world record for the number of procedures performed during his career span from 1960 to 1995. Amongst his many accomplishments, he was especially proud to be a member of what is considered today to be “The Greatest Generation”.
