Harley Albert Sproul was born to Henry and Viola Sproul in Cottage Grove, Oregon on July 1st, 1923. He spent most of his childhood in Goldendale and Battleground, WA and graduated from Vale High School near the Oregon-Idaho border. Shortly after he graduated, he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII. He served time in the Philippines, as well as experiencing a typhoon that almost sank his ship off the coast of Okinawa, Japan. During this time, he and Margery Loraine Sproul were married on August 12th, 1944 and went on to create a big family. They had five boys and one girl, all of which have continued the dedicated work ethic and strong family bond that Harley and Marge instilled in them from a very young age.
After the military, he worked for is father-in-law in Agate Beach, OR. at a rock shop, which spurred his love for precious stones. He was a skilled jewelry maker, and it became his favorite pastime which lead to an abundant rock collection. He also worked as a longshoreman for a short period of time, and eventually became a heating and oil technician. While residing in Astoria, where five of his six children when to high school, he owned his own business called H&R heating that he named after himself and his eldest son.
He was very involved in his family, church, and community. He and Marge faithfully attended every sporting event possible, and held great pride in their children's accomplishments. They both went on a mission to Lame Deer, Montana in the late 80’s where they worked on a Cheyenne Native American Indian reservation and he was involved with their youth boys basketball group.
All throughout his life, Harley was an avid hunter and fisherman. A true outdoorsman, who spent most of his retired days in Prineville, OR. on a lake with his pole and tackle box. He loved recruiting newcomers, and had incredible patience with people of all ages. His love for nature was passed down from generation to generation, and continues to be a family tradition.
Harley and Margery were married for nearly 60 years before she passed away.
He later remarried Elaine Thompson of Prineville. He is proceeded in death by his first wife Margery Sproul and his second wife Elaine Sproul; and his three siblings Chester, Ruth, and Gertrude.
He is survived by his 6 children; Rodney Sproul and his significant other Karen Berg; Latona and her husband John Minish; Dale and his wife Leah Sproul; Jay Sproul; Robert and his wife Donna Sproul; and Fred Sproul. He has eight grandchildren; Stephanie and her husband Lyle Jones; Blaine “Critter” Sproul and his fiancé Holly Mizer; Rebecca and her husband Chuck Broadbent; Mandy Sproul; Melissa Minish and her fiancé Joel Faries; Vincent and Kaitlin Sproul; and Carly Sproul. He also has six great-grandchildren; Kaylee and Coleston Jones; Jakob, Emmalee,Tate, and Spencer Broadbent. He is also survived by his 3 siblings, Don, Edgar, and Dorothy.
The public viewing will be held at Prineville Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28th (199 NE 10th Prineville, Or 97754). The burial ceremony will be at 10:15
