Peggy was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Joseph David Phelps, infant son, Joseph David Phelps, Jr., and her grandson William Michael Romanowski. She is survived by her brother, William F. Black, Jr. (Delores) of Ft. Worth, Texas, and daughters, Margaret Lois Phelps Romanowski (Todd), Julie Phelps Lash (Gerry), grandchildren Phelps Ikner (Hunter), Mary Todd Romanowski, George Lash, Joe Lash, Borden Lash, special niece, Twyla (Mike) Williams, great-niece Haley Williams, and great-nephew, Ryan (Katie) Williams.
Peggy attended Sidney Lanier High School and adored the many 1955 class reunions through the years. She continued her education at Alabama Polytechnic Institute /Auburn University (War Eagle!), and was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She was a dedicated member of Trinity Presbyterian Church for 59 years, and faithfully attended the Bloodworth Sunday School class.
She will be remembered for her deep faith, devotion to family and friends, and love of Auburn football, Lake Jordan, and family birthdays. As matriarch of the family, she stayed active, kept her schedule busy, watched a lot of tennis, and was fiercely independent until the very end. Her spunky personality and constant perseverance will be remembered by everyone who knew her.
Visitation for Peggy will be Friday, November 17, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Trinity Presbyterian Church with the funeral service to follow at 12:00 PM. Burial is private.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Peggy’s memory to Trinity Presbyterian Church / Stephen Committee (1728 S. Hull Street, Montgomery, AL 36104) or to Montgomery Christian School (3265 McGehee Road, Montgomery, AL 36111)
