Mrs. Joan Carolyn Segrest Gibbs passed away on April 28, 2023, in Cullman, Alabama after a brief illness. She was born on July 24, 1932, in Cullman, Alabama Mrs. Gibbs was preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Ivory Sterling of Cullman, Alabama. Sisters, Anita Legg (Gurney), Betty Sterling, both of Cullman, and Nan McElroy (Winfred) of Huntsville. Nephews, Stan and Calvin McElroy of Huntsville, Alabama. Her first husband William Segrest of Shorter, Alabama and her second husband E.C. Gibbs of Hanceville, Alabama.
Mrs. Gibbs is survived by her daughter Leah Segrest Funderburk and son-in-law David Funderburk of Wetumpka, Alabama. Granddaughters Jayne Funderburk Luetzow (Kurt) of Somerville, Alabama, and Joy Funderburk of Wetumpka. Stepchildren E.C. Gibbs (Teresa) of Cullman, Sharon Spatero (Carl) of Panama City, Florida, many other step grandchildren.
Mrs. Gibbs was raised in Cullman, Alabama. As a young adult, lived in Hamilton and Montgomery. She married Mr. William Segrest in 1950 and became a farmer’s wife. She later became employed with the United States Postal Service in Tuskegee, becoming the U.S. Postmaster of Shorter, Alabama until her retirement in 1993. Following the death of Mr. Segrest, she married Mr. E. C. Gibbs in 1988 and moved to Hanceville, Alabama. She enjoyed traveling, painting, watching the Atlanta Braves, and spending time with family and friends.
The family would like to thank Mrs. Gibbs’ friend, Mr. Sim Calvert of Cullman. Appreciation to her doctor, Melinda Hart of Cullman and caregivers Theresa Freeman, Shirley Cox, and Brandon Freeman. In leu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hanceville United Methodist Church, Trinity Presbyterian Church, and Saint Jude Children’s Hospital.
A graveside service for Joan will be held Tuesday, May 2, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Calebee Cemetery, County Road 9, Shorter,, AL 36075.
