Evelyn King Oates, 79, of Verbena, passed away January 3, 2023 at Shelby County hospital after an extended illness. She is survived by her husband, Carl Oates; daughters, Kimberly Vargas and Allison Rocha; grandchildren, Brandy Helton, Conner Neese, Christian Rocha, Savannah Vargas and Adriana Rocha; great grandchildren, Haylie Helton, Jade Helton and Sophia Neese; and by many treasured nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Evelyn was raised in Marbury, Alabama and moved to Montgomery after high school and lived there until 2020 when she relocated to Verbena. Evelyn worked part time at Tony’s Pizza restaurant across from Maxwell AFB off and on for over 25 years, usually her second job, and for Montgomery Area Transit for over 40 years. She was the first woman in the State of Alabama to receive her CDL to drive a city bus. This was an achievement she was very proud to have obtained.
Evelyn loved interacting with the public, helping others, cooking, Elvis Pressley and most of all her family, including her little rescue dog, Kimko.
A visitation for Evelyn will be held Thursday, January 12, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Ridout's Prattville Chapel, 347 East Main Street, Prattville, AL 36067, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. Burial will follow at Coosa River Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Conner Neese, Christian Rocha, Greg Ward, Gene Manning, Dalton Sawyer and Alejandro Rocha.
