William “Dan” Taylor was born May 9, 1954, in Portland, Ore. to William F. and Norma Taylor. He was raised by his grandmother, Nellie Ladenburger, in Portland, with his siblings, Michael, Kathy, Debbie, Bonnie, Beth, and Sherri. Dan graduated from David Douglas High School in 1972, and promptly enlisted in the United States Navy.
The world was in the clutches of the Vietnam War, and Dan served honorably as a Yeoman during this tumultuous time. He and his brother, Mike, both served aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea, a Midway-class aircraft carrier, also affectionately known as the “Ageless Warrior” in tribute to her lengthy career.
Dan worked as a volunteer firefighter in Avon, Colo. prior to settling back in Portland as a fire alarm technician with Johnson Controls and Siemens. He retired in 2020.
Dan loved life, and had many hobbies. He especially enjoyed riding his motorcycle and playing pool.
Dan inherited a dog named Brandy when a good friend passed away, and she quickly became a beloved companion.
Dan passed away on June 21, 2023, in Tualatin, Ore. with loving family at his side. He is survived by his daughters, Danielle Sorensen and Cameo Mendoza; brother, Michael Taylor (Tammie); sisters, Bonnie Cole (Michael), Beth Taylor, and Sherri Taylor; grandchildren, Jarrett Mendoza and Madison Rickert; and brother-in-law, Michael Carbone. He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. and Norma Taylor; grandmother, Nellie Ladenburger; and sisters, Kathy Patrick (David) and Debbie Carbone.
Dan will be remembered as a selfless man who loved his country and his family, especially his daughters. He was a good person, a loyal friend, a loving father, and a true patriot; and took pride in his independence, not wanting to be a burden on anyone.
