After high school, Bill worked at many different jobs including film projectionist, shipyard welder, station manager for Standard Stations and a long career with Continental Can Co. While working downtown Portland at The Siberian sandwich shop, he met the beautiful Rose Caroline Winkler. They were married in 1938, moved to the Portland west hills in 1941 and embarked on an active life of mountaineering, skiing, fishing, camping, backpacking, cycling, canoeing, swimming and gardening, raising most of their own produce as well as meat and eggs—and two children. It was a healthy life style that allowed them both a long and happy life. They were married 63 years.
When Rose died in 2001, Bill carried on taking care of his fruit trees, garden and animals. He enjoyed swimming past the century mark with his buddies at the Harman Swim Center, was always in the middle of a “thriller” and an avid fan of the Mariners and Trailblazers. He looked forward to a yearly celebration with the extended families of Henry Klein, Leo Ferneding and Wanda Bafus, friends from his youth in Vancouver.
William was preceded in death by his parents, siblings and wife. He is survived by his children, David (Mary Ann) Schultz and Jalna Creel, five grandchildren: Gregory Schultz, Molly Rose Steed, Janet A. Nelson and Rhondy M. Nelson, three great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Our charming, entertaining, hardworking, beloved “Old Dad”, as he called himself, has been with us a very long time. He leaves a large void in our lives.
The family wishes to thank his many friends and neighbors and home health care professionals who greatly enriched the last years of his life.
A celebration of life will be held shortly and more information about the date and time will be posted soon.
In lieu of flowers, embrace your loved ones and enjoy the small pleasures in life. That’s what Bill Schultz did.
