Valerie Victoria Van Horn was born February 14, 1942 in Scotts Bluff, Nebraska to Reuben and Lydia (Peil) Kraft and was the youngest of 4 children. The family moved to Washington State, where Valerie graduated from Sunnyside High School with honors.
She married her high school sweetheart, Ronald Van Horn, on October 15, 1960. They settled in the California bay area while Ron was stationed with the Coast Guard and Valerie, for a time, worked as a legal secretary. They had three children, Michael, Rhonda and Patrick. After Ron was discharged in 1966, the family moved to Portland, Oregon.
Valerie was a devoted wife and mother, working hard to make a warm, happy home. She was involved in her families many activities such as Scouting, School Band, Little League etc. She also served as P.T.A. president for several years and taught Sunday school to 3 year olds, which she loved. For many years she was a secretary and office manager at Montavilla Baptist Church retiring soon after her grandbabies arrived. Some of her favorite things to do were camping and traveling in their trailer, garage sales and flea markets, crocheting, crafting and listening to Gaither music. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and spent as much time as possible spoiling them.
Valerie spent many years involved with Women's Bible Study Fellowship and read her Bible daily. Her faith and love for the Lord sustained her throughout her life.
Valerie was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ronald George Van Horn in 2019. Sisters June Cole and husband Kinnard, Peggy Underwood and husband Lewis. Sister-in-law Marjorie Rank, Brother-in-Laws Doug Hall, Jerry Wertenberger and Mike Sauve. Niece Jennifer Van Horn. Nephew Dan Kraft.
She is survived by her three children, Mike Van Horn and fiancé Denise, Rhonda Pearson and husband Dale and Patrick Van Horn. Grandchildren Ben and Tom Pearson, Ryan and Sarah Van Horn. Brother Tom Kraft and wife Bonnie. Sister-in-laws Linda Wertenberger, Gloria Hall, Mary Ann Sauve and Yvonne Van Horn. Brother-in-law Gary Van Horn and wife Sally. Also many wonderful cousins, nieces, nephews and special friends.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 19 at 12 noon in the chapel of Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, 11801 SE Mt. Scott Blvd in Portland, with light refreshments to be served following the service. She will be privately laid to rest with her husband Ron in Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery.
