Sherrian Elizabeth Haggar

Sherrian Elizabeth Haggar or Sherri as she was referred to, was born on October 20th, 1946 in Columbus, Georgia to Nathaniel Haggar and Ruth Edna Scott. Her mother, Ruth, who was one of eleven children, passed away on October 13, 2019, shortly before Sherri went on to glory. They are both sitting in the presence of the Lord as we sit here. Her mother moved her to Cleveland, Ohio in 1948, then to Portland in 1953.

Her mother raised she and her brother alone while working as a chef at various restaurants around Portland. Sherri was blessed with two younger siblings. A brother, Orbie Scott, two years younger, and a sister Jackie Scott Davis, four years younger. Jackie was raised by family friends in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Sherri was educated in the Portland Public Schools and attended Jefferson High School. In 1968 she married her childhood sweetheart, George Weldon Warren. This marriage produced two wonderful children. Sherri Georgeena Warren and Derrick Evan Warren. Both still live in Portland. George Warren passed away in 2005.

Sherri worked for the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) for many years. That job required extensive travel and allowed her to travel to various countries around the world. Needless to say, she was well traveled. She also created the Parents Union in Portland. This was an organization that helped parents of school age children advocate for themselves. Sherri would mediate between the school district and parents when there was any type of disagreement. She also created an education program that taught them about parental rights. The goal was to keep kids in school. Her daughter, Georgeena, was on the Parents Union Board of Directors.

She was an avid artist and always advocated for the arts. She did sculptures, jewelry and other visual arts. She did canvas oil paintings and would have her paintings presented at art shows. She was very well known in the Portland arts community. She had many hobbies. She liked refurbishing antique furniture, refinishing wood furniture, and doing some of the remodeling jobs around the house. But her main focus was on art and sculpture.

On June 18th, 197 she met Wayne Andrew Slates, who until the end was the love of her life. Wayne was the light of her life and that union never wavered. They were together until the day she passed away. He was with her along with her daughter, son, and granddaughter when she passed away.

Sherri was a loving, kind, compassionate, generous person. She was always willing to help others.

Preceding her in death were her mother, Ruth Edna Scott, her first husband, George Weldon Warren, her grandparents, and nine of her mother's ten siblings.

Sherrian leaves to cherish her memory, her daughter, Sherri Georgeena Warren, her son, Derrick Evan Warren, her brother Orbie Scott, her sister Jackie Scott Davis, Her granddaughters Anayla Gabrielle Warren-Premsingh and Ajanae Warren., niece Stacie Lynn Scott, nephews Terrence Laron Scott and Steven Michael Scott, and a host of cousins
