Sheri’s education started at Portland Adventist Elementary in Gresham Oregon, for grades 1-6. She then attended Scappoose Adventist Elementary in Scappoose Oregon for grades 7-8. For high-school, Sheri went all four years to Laurelwood Adventist Academy, which was a boarding school, in Gaston Oregon. After graduating from Laurelwood in May of 1977, Sheri attended Walla Walla University where she took pre-nursing courses that were required at that time. Sheri then moved over to Walla Walla Community College where she graduated with her 2-year associate degree as an RN in 1980.
Sheri was involved in many activities and hobbies! In grade school, she learned to play the clarinet, guitar, and piano. While attending Portland Adventist Elementary, she was also part of the Portland Girls Choir which toured around the state performing for churches and schools. Sheri was also involved in Pathfinders at University Park Adventist church. At Laurelwood, she was part of the Laurel singers – who also toured to churches and events. That group was considered elite if you were a member.
Outside of school and church activities – which kept her busy – Sheri truly enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. Game nights were almost an every weekend occasion. There were also many camping and dunebuggy trips. Sheri also enjoyed traveling. She went on many cruises, to Mexico, Alaska, and the Caribbean. She also enjoyed road trips, where she would go with her mother, Aunt Sandy and usually brought a friend along. They went to California, Victoria British Columbia, Leavenworth Washington, and Thorpe Washington where mom’s family grew up, to name a few places.
Sheri was working by the age of 14. She worked while attending boarding school as a hall monitor. In the summers, Sheri would work for the Oregon Adventist Conference as a Vacation Bible School teacher with a “team” – travelling around Oregon and SW Washington to the different Adventist churches. Sheri also worked two summers as a Big Lake Camp Girls Counselor. After her high-school graduation, Sheri worked as a Girls Summer Dean at Laurelwood.
Once Sheri passed her nursing boards, she worked at Portland Adventist Medical Center as a floor nurse. Sheri worked several years covering the floors, spending most of her time there working on the Oncology unit. In that role, Sheri met the Adventist hospice team and chose to move over to the hospice program still with Portland Adventist and ended her nursing career with that team in 2009. Sheri dedicated her life as a nurse with her career spanning almost 30 years. She spent much of her career sharing her special gift, helping to ease the transition for families and the patient in their passing.
Sheri was a HUGE animal lover. She had two cats, Chelsea and Ainsworth and a dog named Lily while living in North Portland at her Farragut house. When her mother passed, she took Chance, a golden retriever to her home in North Portland on Berkeley.
Sheri moved in with Kelly and her family in 2013 to their home in St. Johns. After a few years, they decided to find a home that was better suited for Sheri and her mobility needs, so they moved out to Brush Prairie Washington in 2016. Sheri stayed there until 2020, when it became apparent that she needed more care than could be provided in the home. She moved into an assisted living right at the same time that COVID hit. She enjoyed her new place at the facility where she spent time making friends with other residents, participating in the activities there like Wiibowling, Bingo, Karaoke, and other fun things. She also enjoyed meals in the dining room sitting with her friends – that is when they weren’t in COVID quarantine – which was frequent her first year there.
Sheri passed away peacefully at the facility, under the care of hospice. The family is very appreciative of those who were able to come and visit with her before she passed. She enjoyed that so much.
Sheri is survived by her sisters Jill Palmer & Kelly Konikow, and her brother, Thom Stanton. Although Sheri never married, she was blessed with a nephew and five nieces, Zachary Lichens, Morgan Lichens, Kassandra Konikow, McKenzie Lichens, Helen Stanton, and Rachel Stanton.
Sheri – your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure.
