September 2, 1948, a typical 78 degree day in Portland, Oregon. But this day was far from typical as Sheila Theresa Reid was born and joined her 10 siblings. Sheila was the 11th child born to Walter and Anna Reid, and was followed by 5 more siblings over the next 7 years. Boy what a family to join.
Sheila spent her childhood playing with her 15 brothers and sisters and just enjoying being a kid in Northeast Portland. She attended St Andrews for elementary and middle school and then Thomas Jefferson High School. During High School Sheila had jobs she obtained through school, but you might often find her enjoying a game of baseball with her siblings and the neighborhood kids. She was a pretty good baseball player and could hit the ball with the best of them. It's also been said she could give the boys a pretty good punch in the arm when they needed it!
Right after Sheila graduated from Jefferson High School, she got a job with the Veteran's Administration Hospital, where she spent almost 37 years in the nursing field, with only the last few years working in Administration as a Medical Transcriptionist. The pride and joy Sheila got from the work she did was always evident as she was a caregiver by nature....no one had to teach her how to care for others, she was a natural at it.
Sheila was an amazing woman, who welcomed everyone into her open, loving arms. She was a second Mom to many. She was a guide, a protector and a constant reminder that hard work and dedication are important in all aspects of life. She loved all of her family and was always willing to help. She loved deeply and sincerely with all of her heart. She was a gentle but firm rock in her family and has left a legacy of love for those remaining to carry forward.
Sheila fought a good fight, she went out punching ... like 1, 2, 3 ... but on an overcast Wednesday afternoon, she drifted off to be with loved ones waiting patiently for her to join them. On June 14, 2017, Sheila passed on and left behind memories to be cherished, and traditions to be continued.
Sheila is survived by 7 siblings, Virginia, Thomas, Barbara, Fred, Michael, Della and Darlene, as well as a countless number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, sisters-and-brothers-in law, and friends.
