Born in Jackson Louisiana on October 2nd 1922 to Mr. Willie and Emma Phillips. Sarah had 4 siblings; 2 sisters Marie and Debres and 2 brothers Percy and James. Sarah moved to Portland OR in 1952 where she met, fell in love and married Wiley W. Sims in 1953.
In 1954 she was the first black person even more so, the first black woman to work for Northwest Industrial Laundry at 40 cents per hour, opening the door for future generations to come. Sarah worked there for over 40 years before retiring.
Sarah touched many lives, and if she didn't get the chance to, it was only because she didn't cross your path. If there was something that she could do for you she would. Sarah had the heart of an angel. Sarah would nurture your heart, your spirit, and your body at the same time. She stood true to, "God said it, I believe it and that settles it!"
Sarah loved to sing, especially one of her favorite songs, God's Wonderful People. On this day we are blessed to honor a wonderful special one of a kind woman. If there was only one spot in heaven she has claimed it. Grandpa is finally able to rest in peace, now that she is by his side. Sarah paved the way for many to follow and she was a perfect example. Thank God for the honor.
We love you Sarah may you rest in peace.
Sarah is proceeded in death by: Mr. Willie and Emma Phillips, her husband Wiley W. Sims, and her 4 siblings. Left to celebrate her home going is her 4 children; Oldest son Jessie Hawkins and wife Brenda, daughter Emma Gaston, son Harold Kent and wife Judy, and son Roger Sims along with a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews in addition to a host of friends.
