FR. STEPHEN M. (RAYMOND) RYAN, O.S.M., a solemn professed friar and priest of the Order of Friar Servants of Mary (Servites)-United States of America Province, died Saturday August 19, 2017 at The Gardens at Laurelhurst Village in Portland, Oregon. He was 88 years of age, a friar for 67 years and a priest for 62 years. Fr. Stephen was born March 20, 1929, in Oak Park, IL, the son of the late Lawrence and Mary Agnes(Moran) Ryan. He is the brother of the late Betty, Larry, James, Anthony, Sr. Mary Lawrence, D.C., William and Frank and is survived by his brother John and sisters Peg, Noreen and Jeanne. Fr. Steve entered the Servite Order in 1947 at Mt. St. Philip, Granville, WI, professed solemn vows on Oct. 4, 1953 and was ordained a priest on May 15, 1955. His ministries included-Instructor, St. Philip High School, Chicago, IL.; Instructor & Principal, Servite High School, Anaheim, CA.; Principal, Servite College, W. Australia; Prior Provincial, Servite Western Province; Formation Director, Sarpi Priory, Berkeley, CA; Co-Director, The Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother “The Grotto”, Portland, OR; Chaplain, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Portland, OR; Director of Pastoral Care, Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA; Administrator, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Cottage Grove, OR. He retired in 2012 to The Gardens at Laurelhurst Village, Portland, OR, where he remained until his death. Funeral Mass and burial: Friday, August 25, 2017 - Chapel at Laurelhurst Village, 3060 SE Stark St. Portland, OR. Viewing at 8:30 AM; Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM. Interment in the Servite Cemetery, The Grotto.
