Patrick "Pat" Brian Callaghan

He was born in Astoria, Oregon on May 30, 1946 and grew up in southeast Portland. Commitment ceremony will be May 29, 2018 at 10:00am, with a procession beginning promptly from Lincoln Memorial Park Funeral Home leading to Willamette National Cemetery, for a commitment service with military honors.

During his life, he was a student and member at St. Ignatius Catholic Church and his faith carried him through his life. After completing his studies, Pat served in the United States Marines and served in the Vietnam War.

Pat grew up fishing on Oregon’s beautiful rivers and lakes and developed a strong passion for steelhead and trout fishing in the Pacific Northwest and had some favorite fishing holes on the Sandy and Deschutes rivers. We loved hearing his fishing stories of the “one that got away” - he entertained us all and he never passed up a river outfitter store to find that new-fangled lure. That being said, he will be especially missed by our local outfitters and bait shops.

In 1990, Pat married his wife Jan Peters, which he would say was his best “catch” of his life. Together they centered their love around each other, blending their families, creating a warm loving home, where everyone was welcome. As the family gathering hub they filled it with laughter, abundant joy and memories through all the seasons life brings.

Pat worked in the welding fabrication industry and for First American Title Company before retiring to fish, read and spending quality time with family and friends.

Many knew Pat with his gruff exterior, but he was a caring gentle spirit and a tender teddy-bear inside whose heart was easily melted by those he loved. He took-in his grandmother and he and Jan cared for her the remaining years of her life.

Pat was proud to be a Marine and was a role model for integrity and courage to the men, women and children in our family and extended families. His life-giving spirit forever enriched and changed our family, and we are most grateful to God to have been blessed with him in our lives.

Pat is survived by his wife, Jan, and blended family of daughters Gayla Alverson, Jennifer Peters Swan (John) and Michele Callaghan Arvey, sons Todd Peters, Michael Callaghan (Lilly), Jeff Peters (Richelle), 15 grand-children, 2 great-grand-children, a sister, Kathy Nordberg and a host of extended family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you make a donation to your charity of choice.
