Myrtle Louise McCallum was born on March 30th, 1917 in Satus, Washington. She was born to John Albert McCallum and Myrtle May McCallum. John and Myrtle had three other girls: Clarica-Anne, Dorothy Mae, and Frances Alberta. Louise (the name she always went by) and Ralph were married on June 28th, 1952. She brought to her marriage two sons: William Frederick Smuland and James Albert Smuland, from her previous marriage. Then, together, her and Ralph gave birth to a daughter: Debra Louise Morrison. Ralph and Louise were married for 59 years. The bought a house in Portland, where they lived out their lives. Louise graduated from beauty college in Hollywood, California in 1935. She then worked in Inglewood, California for $15 a week. She also worked in Hollywood, Culver City and Westwood, California. In 1942, she went to Tacoma, Washington, met, and married Frederick Williams Smuland. They had two sons. They divorced in 1948. Fred passed away a year later and in January of 1949 she was left with the Medical Arts parking lot in Portland, Oregon, which she worked until it was sold in 1964. In 1948, she bought her first beauty shop. She purchased another beauty shop in 1970 and another in 1971. At age 73, in 1990, she was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration. Her eyes were getting so bad that not only did she have to retire, but she also had to stop driving; all at around the same time in 1991. This was a horrible time in her life as she loved nothing better than to get into her car and drive anywhere and everywhere. She believed in the Lord Jesus Christ and lived her life through him, helping anyone and everyone she could. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed.
Arrangements under the direction of Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home, Portland, OR.
