As a child and throughout her life, Katie loved people and always made people smile. With a father in the Air Force, Katie moved around the Pacific Northwest with her family until settling in Portland, OR. As a teen, Katie excelled in the classroom, making straight A’s in high school, and played volleyball, basketball and was in the drama club. Katie attended college at Gonzaga University where she graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Political Science.
Katie began her career in San Francisco but eventually returned home to Portland to work for Alcoa. She attended night school earning her accounting degree and made a career change to work for Providence Hospital as a project manager in accounting with Providence Health services.
Katie’s passions in life revolved around spending time with her family. She loved to discover new recipes and experiment in the culinary field, producing many meals for her family to enjoy. Katie loved to travel, exploring beaches around the world and also frequented local destinations including the San Juan Islands. She loved the outdoors; biking, kayaking and scuba diving and also enjoyed reading and doing yoga.
Katie will be remembered as a gracious sister, a loyal daughter and a loving aunt and a good friend to many. Katie was an intelligent, sweet, determined, and forgiving woman with so much love to give.
Katie is survived by her mother Marilyn Van Rooy; sisters: Sally Smith (Richard Scott), Mary Echanis (John) and Nancy Van Rooy; nieces and nephews: Molly, Matt (Lisa), Betsy(Steve), Bradi (Luke), Chuck (Tess), Mike (Jill), Drew (Lauren); and 11 Great nieces and nephews.
Katie was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Clemens William Van Rooy.
A service will be held Thursday, June 12, 2014, 2pm at Zeller Chapel of the Roses, Portland, OR. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Katie’s honor to Compass Oncology of Providence Health Care, for ovarian cancer. 5050 NE Hoyt Suite 256 Portland, Or. 97213.
