James was born on Thursday, March 2, 1944 in Pomona, New Jersey, son of the late Phillip W. Guenther and the late Mary Elizabeth (Thomas) and he was one of eight children.
He started his military career in 1964 serving in the Navy, Merchant Marines, and the Coast Guard, traveling all over the world. He served his country honorably until his retirement in 1989. He is a Hero!! James was an exceptional man who enjoyed great food, museums, books, garage sales, and most of all exploring and learning all he could. James loved his family, friends, and holding on to sentimental memories. In July 2013, James moved to Portland, Oregon to be close to his daughter and grandchildren.
James is survived by his daughter Donna (Bryan) Easlick, his grandchildren Sherry Kopp, Charles Kopp Jr., Case Kopp, great grandchildren; Samantha, Manny, Eddie, Emma, Charles lll, Dixie, Jonathan, Brayden, and Lyric. He is also survived by his brother William “Bill”, and sister Erma Mason.
He is predeceased by his parents Phillip W. (Mary Elizabeth) Guenther, brothers Robert, Phillip “Joe”, his sisters Alice Pencak, Phyllis Hibbitts, and Mary Davenport.
A service was held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at Willamette National Cemetery.
