Growing up, Grandpa always provided.  He loved to play the role of Santa at Christmas, and took great delight watching us open all our gifts.  He supported my education and encouraged me to go higher in school.  I thank him for my tenacity and what people tell me is my quick wit.  He would frequently surprise me with his large vocabulary, and what seemed like a photographic memory, especially with geography.  He had the Portland Metro area etched in his brain and knew navigation routes better than my GPS; he was the original GPS in fact.  I remember swimming in his “ool”, as he called it, noting the P was not in it and he liked to keep it that way.  He had excellent mole-catching theory and practice and would even keep a tally of the moles caught in his backyard.  I can hear him proudly saying with laughter, “They’re in the big mole hill up in the sky.”  I enjoyed working with him in his office, (which he called his “orifice”) on different projects, especially as he got older. 

He was supportive when my husband and I bought our first house and took the time to drive us around potential neighborhoods and even had me hand pick items from his kitchen to help us start out.  I would sometimes bend the rules with his cardiac diet and spoil him with Shari’s pies and Tollgate Inn prime rib, treats from two of his favorite restaurants.  

He entrusted me with his care and we got very close in his last years when I went with him to all of his doctors’ appointments and advocated for him and his health until the very end.  It was the least I could do for the man who became my father figure. 

I’m very thankful that he got to meet my daughter before he passed.   He seemed tickled when I told him that she already seemed so smart.  I know he’s up there flying with his dear Lozetta, until we meet again.

Lois called him “JM”, thus so did I.  He was my father-in-law for over 10 years, and remained a father figure to me to the end.  I sought his counsel on a range of things, from what brand of barbecue grill he preferred (Kingsford) to remediating blistering exterior house paint (scrape and sand carefully; fill in as needed with a light coat of spackle before priming and re-painting).   His advice was sound and well-considered, often based on personal experience.  

He was a true gentleman who would answer  "Thank You" with a courtly “You’re entirely welcome.”  Whenever he came over for a meal, he would graciously tell me, a mediocre cook, “You’ve outdone yourself.”  

He was a “Get it done and get it right” kind of guy, big on preventative maintenance and buying well-made, well-designed things that would last.  His professional accomplishments aside, he commanded respect because he was well-read, articulate and witty.   On the occasions that my comments elicited his hearty laugh, I felt that I surely must be one of the cleverest people he’d ever known.

I admired his grit.  He was not one to give up on his goals.  Failure Was Never an Option, his autobiography, was written when he was 80 years old.  The stories he could tell, and the detail that he could remember!  He lived a remarkable life filled with many rich, unique experiences.  

He will be missed, but now joins his beloved Lozetta.   In true JM fashion, he pre-arranged for their gravestone to be revised to exact specifications upon his burial.  In his own words, they are now together forever.

I met Jim when the City and County dispatchers merged together at Kelly Butte. From day one it was obvious how much the County deputies trusted and respected Jim, as he in turn respected them. Jim was fun to work with, his knowledge of County geography was amazing as was his curiosity about so many different subjects. I always knew there was something special about Jim, how regal his stature, how even tempered and good natured he was, his wit and humor. I would like to thank the Dixon family for sharing the family photos, he was great man and the photos prove it!  Jim was truly an officer (military) and a gentleman. Rest in peace Jim, you were loved and will be missed but never forgotten.  10-79 Lt. Col. Mr. Dixon.

Jim was my second coach when I was in training at 911 in portland in 1981.  My original coach felt I couldn't do the job.  I was called into the office and told I had 2 weeks to improve or I was gone.  I asked for a new coach and luckily I got Jim.  He was such a pleasure to work with and I learned so much from him.  Not just 911 but history, local and national politics, etc.  No one had the geographical knowledge of Multnomah county that he had.  Much of it gained from him flying over it in a small plane..He could almost literally tell you what businesses were on each block of the massive, heavily populated county.  I truly think Jim was a genius and a rennisance man.  Everyone loved him, no one ever spoke a bad word about him becaause there weren't any.  O..Jim not only saved my job those next 2 weeks he certified me.  As a result I worked over 28 years for the city of Portland at 911.  The city and I cannot thank Jim enough..I will never forget his laugh.

I first met jim when the city and county merged their dispatch services in the middle 70s in the underground bunker at kelly butte...i was city and he was county.  He had so much knowledge and was always happy to share it.  Later when i became the training manager he taught county geography classes😊   i always appreciated his work ethic and knowledge.  He was passionate about officer  
safety and always had a smile and never had a bad day.

Dixon Family Members:
I was lucky enough to meet Jim Dixon approximately 25 years ago through the OCFRO litigation. We became fast friends thereafter.  
I was one of the 2 lawyers (with Wisconsin lawyer Eugene Duffy, deceased) who worked closely with a committee of federal retirees, primarily military retirees, to recover taxes that Oregon assessed them on their federal pensions. This taxation occurred although there was a federal statute requiring equal treatment of the pensions of both federal and state retirees.  
Jim was brilliant and, like the other military members of the committee,  only knew how to continue forward no matter what legal or political obstacles were encountered. As a result of Jim's and that committee's hard work and endurance, we ultimately recovered $340 million for Oregon federal retirees. 
He was quite a man. I am sincerely sorry for your loss.
