Howard was born May 31, 1928, to parents, Leon and Alma (Alsleben) Shaw. Howard was the middle of three children and grew up during the Depression in Portland. He attended Kellogg Grade School, Benson High School, and graduated from Franklin High School.
Howard met his beloved Donna on a blind date which led to their marriage in 1950. Together they raised five children in East Portland. The majority of Howard's career was with Multnomah County retiring as a traffic engineer in 1985. In retirement, he and Donna began the next chapter of their lives as they continued their successful real estate business and began to travel.
As the children grew and left the nest, Howard's love for sailing began in earnest. His first sailboat was a 17' Sydney and thus began his accomplished career as a sailor. In 1975, Howard and Donna joined the Portland Yacht Club where Howard was Commodore in 1998.
Howard's next sailboat was "Adios", a 43' Columbia which he and Donna cruised before buying "Camelot", a 54' Hunter. Howard and his first mate, Donna, sailed to Mexico, Hawaii, to the San Juan Islands, and were regulars racing and cruising on the Columbia River.
For 20 years, Howard and Donna spent winters in their Palm Desert, Calif. home where Howard spent most days staying active walking, bicycle riding, playing golf and tennis.
Howard was a lifelong learner, an avid reader and a history buff. As a younger man Howard loved cars and playing hockey and volleyball. In retirement his activities were walking, golf, tennis and especially sailing. Family gatherings to celebrate life's milestones were a highlight for Howard.
Howard is survived by his wife, Donna; sister, Barbara Roberts; his children, Deborah (Richard) Bloomfield, Trudy Wegner, Craig Shaw, Sandra (Richard) Twigg, and Melissa (Douglas) Jones. He was adored by his grandchildren, Jeff, Kym, Andrew, Emily, William, Charles, Albert, Benjamin, Kellie, Lisa, Joseph, Michael and Christopher; and 40 great-grandchildren. Howard loved and was very proud of his extended family.
Howard will forever be missed by his family whose memories include his love and devotion for Donna, summer road trips and vacations at the family beach cabin, his strong work ethic, frugal nature and his independent and adventurous spirit.
A celebration of life will be held at the Portland Yacht Club on May 7, 2024 at 11 a.m.
In remembrance, a Tribute donation may be made to the Parkinson's Association.
