Ernestina was born in La Boca, Argentina and was the second oldest of 3 children born to Theodore and Otillia Kern. From their farm in Entre Rios, Argentina, the family moved to Buenos Aires where Ernestina met her husband Ewaldt Niemetschek at church. They were married on December 20, 1952, and raised three children.
Ernestina had a deep, abiding Christian faith and was a loving devoted wife, mother and active in her church life. On May 1, 1961, their family arrived in Miami, Florida. Shortly thereafter, the family moved to Portland, Oregon. Ernestina courageously and wholeheartedly ventured into setting up their homelife, school life, church life, and began cultivating new friends in their new country. She was hardworking and loved her family fiercely.
Ernestina is survived by her daughter Mirta (Tim) Strickland of Tigard, son Carlos (Donna) Niemetschek of Happy Valley, daughter Rita (Ron) Cook of Beaverton. She is also survived by her four grandchildren-- Selena Hing, Stephanie Sullivan, Tyson Niemetschek and Lyndsay Zerba. Then, she is survived by her eight great-grandchildren—Zac Zerba, Hudson Sullivan, Grayson Sullivan, Kali Zerba, Asher Hing, Liam Zerba, Sophie Sullivan, and Stella Sullivan. She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Otillia Kern, her older sister, Frieda Klauser, her husband, Ewaldt Niemetschek, and twelve days after her passing, January 29, 2024, her younger sister passed away, Nidia Margarita (Kern) Buchwitz.

A funeral service for Ernestina will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 12:00 PM at Finley-Sunset Hills Mortuary, 6801 SW Sunset Hwy, Portland, OR 97225. A reception will follow.
Following the reception will be a graveside service at 2:00 PM at Sunset Hills Memorial Park.
