Elaine Clara Geist

Elaine was a native Oregonian with a rich heritage of Oregon ancestry (literally pioneer stock). She lived in the Portland area most of her life and took great pride in her Oregon heritage. Elaine’s accomplishments in life were numerous. Some of which include her daughter Eileen, and marriages to two wonderful husbands. Elaine was widowed at the age of 20 during World War II when her first husband Fred, a young infantry lieutenant, was killed in Italy in 1944. After the war she participated in initiating the Oregon Chapter of Gold Star Wives support organization. (This is an organization of widows of veterans who have died in service of our country).

Elaine was an active participant in the Gresham Elks Widows group. She was an accomplished china painter and actively involved in their organizations and teaching. Her marriage to her second husband Harold Geist, a decorated World War II veteran, was a relationship full of love and many joyful activities. Harold was a Greyhound bus driver for thirty years, and after retirement he and Elaine enjoyed attending Greyhound picnics and functions. They also enjoyed traveling in their motor home, with trips to the Oregon coast and fishing expeditions. She and Harold were involved in raising Shelties as well as significant involvement with horse racing. They were also active participants in square dancing.

Throughout her life, Elaine demonstrated great courage and resolve when facing adverse circumstances. Her life has inspired her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Eileen and son-in-law Ed Nelson.
