Hernan Leones Guiang was born in Bugallon, Pangasinan, Philippines, to parents, Dr. Rodolfo and Dr. Maria (Leones) Guiang on September 14th, 1939. He was brother to Rodolfo, Loida, Alex, Osler, and Lorna.
In his youth, Hernan was known to have a great sense of humor. In addition, he was fun, friendly and adventurous. These were qualities that followed Hernan throughout his life. Hernan attended Far Eastern University in the Philippines, where he earned his undergraduate and Doctor of Medicine degrees.
Hernan married Josefina Espino in the Philippines. The two were from the same town (Hernan’s father Dr. Rodolfo was the delivery doctor at Josefina’s birth!) and reconnected when they both attended the same university.
The young couple relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Hernan began his Medical Internship at St. Michael Hospital. Hernan then went on to serve an Internal Medicine Residency at Harper Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He was granted Fellowships in Endocrinology at William Beaumont Hospital and Henry Ford Hospital. Dr. Hernan Guiang was one of the first Board Certified Endocrinologists in the United States in 1970 (first examination given in the USA for this specialty).
In 1971, Hernan opened his Endocrinology and Internal Medicine private practice at Mercy Hospital and Hackley Hospital in Muskegon, Michigan. He later specialized in Diabetes Medicine and worked in the field for over 40 years. Hernan then served as the Medical Director of the Diabetic and Endocrine Clinic for Mercy General Health Organization until 2013. Hernan not only took a genuine interest in the health and care of his patients, but he took the time to get to know them.
Following his retirement, Hernan and Josefina relocated to Oregon to be closer to their two daughters - Nanette and Jennine - and their families.
Hernan will be remembered as a man who was loving and caring to his family and dedicated to his profession. He lived life the way he intended.
He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, doctor, colleague, and friend, and his memory will continue on in the hearts of all who knew him.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Josefina; daughters, Nanette Wilson (husband Jay) and Jennine Watson (husband David); sisters, Loida Scarfone (husband Santo)and Lorna Kumabe (husband Randall); brothers, Alex Guiang (wife Lilian) and Osler Guiang (wife Myrna); sister-in-law, Erlinda Guiang (wife of Hernan’s deceased brother, Dr. Rodolfo Guiang, Jr.); grandchildren Riley and Ciara Wilson and Elise and Nathaniel Watson; many extended family; colleagues, patients, and friends.
