Betty Jo Ann Hale (BJ) beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 4, 2025, in Portland, OR, at the age of 92. Born in Peetz, Colorado on May 27, 1932, she and her three sisters, Midgie, Robbie and Julie grew up across the mid-west, mostly in South Dakota. Her sisters preceded her in death.
BJ led a vibrant life. She graduated from Portland’s Grant High School in 1950. She and Dale Graves married prior to her graduation and two children, Terri and Brad, quickly came after. Later, she found love again with Victor Hale, whom she married in 1981. She was widowed by Victor in November 2023.
BJ brought joy, kindness, humor, and encouragement to others through her extraordinary skills at planning celebrations like The Order of the Blue Carbuncle Sherlock Holmes mystery nights and retreats, The Ides of March Toga party, themed birthdays, tea parties and so much more. She was a lover of children first then dolls, antiques, classical music, books, reading, costuming, writing plays/poetry and directing her five grandchildren and Victor (BuBu) known as the Granny Mame Players, in holiday plays.
BJ was a stay-at-home mom for many years. She later had a successful career working in Human Resources at Far West Bank and Nature’s Grocery Store, where one of her tasks was her strong suit, planning events! Her warmth and people-skills left a lasting impression and gave her many, to this day, friendships.
BJ leaves her children Brad Graves (Sherri) and Terri Graves Burton, five grandchildren Alexis Mobley (Daniel), Tia Slightham (Christopher ), Colby Florea (Caroline), Trevor Graves (Crystal) and Bryant Graves, six great grandchildren Ellieanna Graves, Hudson Slightham, Reilly Graves, Emerson Mobley, Beckett Slightham and Parker Mobley, her niece Vicki Harper, and many extended family members in Washington, Utah, South Dakota, Ohio and England. Another family member is Phoebe, her stuffed baby Gorilla. Phoebe attended all family events dressed to the hilt. BJ requested that Phoebe remain in mourning for six months. She plans to attend BJ’s memorial service.
Betty Jo Ann Warrick Graves Hale lived a life full of sparkle and endless love. Her legacy is the joy she spread, the creativity she inspired, and the laughter she left behind.
Her heart had room for all children, especially her grand and great grandchildren, but that also included the neighbor kids and really any child she happened upon. In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to any organization that benefits children, such as the Randall Children's, Doernbecher Children's, or St. Jude's Children’s Research Hospitals.
