December 1, 1919 – August 18, 2016
Stephen Whipple Woodberry peacefully passed away August 18, 2016 from heart failure. He was 96 years young.
Stephen was born in Beverly Massachusetts December 1, 1919. Always a sailor, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. After WW II, he accepted the first of the two jobs he would hold in life, at the Farrar Brown Company, where he was a salesman for televisions and LP records in their earliest days. He then joined Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Maine, where he eventually became Vice President for communications. He was very social and involved with the community throughout his life. He served on many boards including The Salvation Army, the Red Cross, the YMCA, and the Portland Country Club. He was a long time member of the Woodfords Club, the Boy Scouts, the Sterling club, the American Lung Association, and of the Masons. He also served as president of the Portland Rotary Club.
Stephen is preceded in death by his beautiful and very talented wife June Story Woodberry. June and Steve joined Woodfords Congregational Church right after the War and, along with about 50 other young couples, helped grow that church into the largest congregational church in New England at the time. The family moved to Falmouth in the 1960s and became lifelong members of The Episcopal Church of St. Mary. He is survived by his daughter, Holly Woodberry Keith of Boulder Colorado, grandchildren Brian, Jason and Kaili of Colorado. He was also blessed with five wonderful great grandchildren Kyra, Jadyn, Eli, Mikayla and Evelyn.
Stephen was an avid golfer and adored by everyone who met him. He has a strong spirit, was quick witted, charming, funny, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a true gentlemen and life won’t be the same without him.
There are no visiting hours scheduled. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday August 23rd, 2016 at 11:00am at The Episcopal Church of St. Mary 43 Foreside Road in Falmouth, Maine. Interment will follow at The St. Mary Cemetery behind the church.
