Shirley was born in Sanford, Maine on March 8, 1927. The daughter of George and Florence “Moss” McHugh. She graduated from Sanford High School in 1945 and the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing in 1948.
Shirley began her nursing career at the Maine General Hospital, and held various positions throughout her career. She was the Assistant Director of Nursing at Pine Point Manor in Scarborough and the Director of Nursing at Seaside Nursing Home in Portland until she retired in 1980. Her love of nursing brought her back to Seaside where she taught C.N.A. courses and was a part time supervisor until retiring for good in 1989.
After retirement she and her husband spent winters in Florida and summers in Scarborough and traveled to many places in Europe and the United States. Shirley’s nursing skills helped her care for her husband Carl in their family home until his death in 1999.
Shirley was known for her baked goodies. She enjoyed sharing her treats with family, friends and neighbors. She brought pies and cookies to all holiday gatherings and even baked 150 whoopie pies for her granddaughter’s wedding.
Shirley was a strong, independent and kind woman who lived her life to the fullest. She was an avid reader who enjoyed doing the daily crossword puzzle, crypto quip and jumble. Shirley stayed active by swimming, line dancing and going for her daily walk. She was a woman of faith and a long time member of the Black Point First Congregational Church of Scarborough.
Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Carl, and three sisters, Gladys McHugh, Maybell Tibbetts and Lenore Lavallee; and two brothers, George and Frank McHugh.
Surviving are her daughter, Pamela Bernstein and her husband Mark of Scarborough and her son Carl E. Warren Jr. and his wife Georgina of Westbrook. One grandson Joshua Bernstein and his fiancé Briana Pelletier of Scarborough. Four granddaughters Kate Bernstein Clark and her husband Jamie of California, Erika Warren Dempsey and her husband Jim of Colorado, Calley Warren and her fiancé Chris Raney of Westbrook and Amanda Jackson and her husband Shawn of Biddeford. Three great grandsons Brady and Bryce Clark, and Miles Bernstein. Four great granddaughters Maggie Bernstein, Taylor McKay, Khianna and Milania Jackson and several nieces and nephews.
At Shirley’s request there will be no visiting hours. A celebration of her life will be held Saturday August 25, 2018 from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Jones and Rich Funeral Home in Portland, Maine. On-line condolences can be given to the family at www.jonesrichandbarnes.com.
