Born on December 9, 1932 to Napoleon Dana Wentworth and Margaret McDonough, she was the youngest of eight children and raised in Morrill's Corner of Portland Maine. Mary attended St Joseph's Catholic School and graduated from Deering High School. Mary lived with and cared for her parents and son Philip in Portland and then later wed and moved to North Gorham with her husband Harold and their collective 5 children, only to have a 6th child together a couple of years later.
Mary had a fulfilling 20yr career that took place later in life at Park Danforth retirement home, starting as kitchen assistant for a short period of time before transitioning to dining room hostess and eventually front desk receptionist and Emergency Staff support. She retired in 2004 to spend her days caring for granddaughters Alicia & Emily in her home.
Mary was a devout catholic and was a lifetime communicant of St Joseph's parish.
The lives that Mary has personally touched and positively affected are countless. From volunteering daily at the local schools when Matthew was younger to befriending and working with many others in various capacities that she has met along the way. She was very much loved and respected by her family and friends. She spent many summers, weekends and school vacations surrounded by her grandchildren, especially spending the most time with Marcy Lane Kallis and Sean Chandler. They credit her as being a pinnacle of influence in their lives.
Mary loved to cook meals for family and also enjoyed baking, with her "secret chocolate chip cookie recipe" being her specialty.
Mary made friends very easily. She always had an open door policy and loved to chat about life and family with everyone. Pretty much everyone that Mary has met was openly welcomed into her life. She was truly a humanitarian.
Mary spent the last couple of years of her life living in an apartment building owned and occupied by Marcy and her husband Mike. This was specifically requested and organized by Marcy & Mike so that Mary would, without a doubt, be surrounded by family for the remainder of her life. The unconditional love and endless support which Mary was known for, was in turn provided for her until the end.
She was truly the Matriarch of our family and will fondly but sadly be missed.
She was predeceased by her husband Harold in September 1974, son Philip in March 1989, and son Mark in February 2020. She is survived by her children, Harold R Lane Jr of Portland, Donna J Touchette of North Carolina, Peter A Lane of South Carolina and Matthew J Lane of Windham Maine, as well as numerous grandchildren, great & great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and daughter in laws.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the St Jude Children's Hospital.
Arrangements are by Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, Portland.
